The cover of this book didn’t initially appeal to me, and the first two pages seemed rather dull and gray. I had a feeling that it wouldn’t be an interesting read.
However, at a certain point, I made the decision to continue turning the pages until the end, and I was deeply moved by what unfolded.
The story revolves around a country that operates as a massive word factory. In this magical land, people must “crunch the words” before they can speak them. The words are sold in stores, categorized into sections like “naughty words” and “nice words.”
The wealthier a person is, the more words they can afford to buy and speak. Unfortunately, the protagonist, a young boy, comes from a poor family and can’t afford to buy words. He must scavenge unwanted words from garbage piles or catch words that occasionally float in the air using a net. Due to his lack of words, he is unable to communicate with the girl he likes or even wish her a happy birthday. However, there is a wealthy boy who lives upstairs, and he can freely express himself to the girl, saying whatever he desires.
The ending of the story is incredibly heartwarming. Alongside the touching plot, the composition and color scheme of the entire book change in accordance with the protagonist’s emotions. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection. It’s a genuinely delightful read that will leave you with a smile on your face!
