Lara’s dedication to reading this book is evident, as she has gone through it four times before writing this introduction! The motivation behind these multiple readings is not because the content is too challenging to comprehend, but rather because Lara discovered different insights with each read. She noticed that the book possesses a remarkable sense of hierarchy. The first reading was a personal experience, followed by a shared reading session with her children. The third reading involved delving into the author, Tim Marshell’s introduction. And now, in this article, Lara embarks on her fourth reading, navigating back and forth through the pages, adding another layer of understanding.

The book in question explores how the world is changing geography to provide answers to this intriguing subject. Lara’s thorough engagement with the material showcases her commitment to gaining a comprehensive understanding of the topic.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of geography, history, and international relations. British journalist Tim Marshell, drawing from over 30 years of interviews and his own perspectives, compiled a general compilation on the #internationalsituation. The Chinese version of the book was published by Parent-Child World in August of this year.

Upon my initial reading, I couldn’t help but feel that… um… understanding the intricate international situation would require at least a high school level of knowledge. It doesn’t seem to be on the same level as my parents, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it myself. For someone who appreciates a global perspective, this book is like a collection of sunflowers! And if any adult reads it, their understanding of international relations would be significantly enriched.

However, just as I was about to create my own video, my 9-year-old son picked up the book and started reading it, and my 6-year-old daughter joined in. Surprisingly, the book is not as difficult as it initially seemed! So, I recorded our reading interaction, capturing some clips to share with you.

#Russian

Where is the largest country in the world? Perhaps most children can answer “Russia”~

but how large is the largest country? Do we truly grasp the concept of 17 million square kilometers?

However, if a five-year-old sees long train tracks on a map and you inform them that it takes 7 days and 6 nights to cross Russia by train, it might provide a good understanding! The same idea emerged in yesterday’s online class.

We discussed Ethiopia in Africa, and I asked the students if they knew how many people live there.

No one could answer… So I posed a question: which country do you think has a similar population? Taiwan, Japan, or China? Most people chose Japan.

Indeed, the population bases of these three places make it an obvious choice. Using this method is more intuitive than simply stating “more than 100 million people”!

#China

When discussing modern China, our thoughts often gravitate towards Beijing and Shanghai. While we are aware of the Tibet issue, the reasons behind its sparse population and tight control elude our understanding. This book enlightens us with a full-page picture that provides the answer – the water source! The Himalayas, situated at the intersection of China, India, and Nepal, not only boast the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, but also serve as the origin of three major rivers in China. Even in the 21st century, when the country’s foundations have shifted away from agriculture, controlling the water source grants a significant advantage over neighboring regions.

This same principle is evident in the ongoing conflicts between India and Pakistan, where both countries grapple with similar issues. The critical area of Roshmir (yes, that scarf…) exemplifies this dynamic. In September and November of this year, India engaged in border disputes with both China and Pakistan respectively. These conflicts highlight the importance of international relations and the context that shapes treacherous situations. By comprehending the broader context, one can gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of global events.

#America

This year, I have delved extensively into matters concerning America,

particularly the issues raised by the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Whether it was through coursework or the #ThursdayProNews video series,

I have explored various aspects of this subject. It is a widely held belief that the United States is a superpower, and this sentiment is shared by people around the world. Regardless of personal preferences, the United States undeniably wields a decisive influence in global affairs.

This book takes a unique approach to help us understand why the United States holds such power. Interestingly, I initially assumed the author to be American, given the extensive praise for the country. However, to my surprise, the author is actually British! (XDDD)

The “Map of Large U.S. Overseas Military Bases” from 2015 presents an intriguing perspective. It challenges my previous belief that the United States primarily utilizes culture to assimilate the world. Instead, it suggests that “military invasion” is the actual means employed. The image depicts U.S. military bases situated in “non-local” states, emphasizing the extensive global presence of American military forces.

To be honest, I was not aware of the U.S. military’s presence in Germany until Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from the country this year. Up until that point, my perception was limited to their deployments in Afghanistan and South Korea. This revelation underscores the significant reach and influence of the United States as a global superpower.

The title of “global superpower” is not an empty or superficial designation, as this map effectively demonstrates. It serves as a stark reminder of the substantial military infrastructure and impact maintained by the United States around the world.

#Europe

Europe, a region of great significance, bears the weight of nearly a thousand years of human civilization development. From a geographical perspective, one can discern the divergent trajectories of Southern and Northwestern Europe. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the course of history was significantly altered by the two world wars of the twentieth century, causing a profound reshaping of the global map.

It is worth mentioning that the English edition of this book was published in 2019, prior to the successful departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Consequently, the map still includes the United Kingdom as part of the European Union. However, by 2020, the dust had settled, and this small but noteworthy change had been observed by keen-eyed individuals. ^^

#Africa

Africa, indeed, appears to be distant from us both geographically and culturally, resulting in a lack of understanding. Many of us hold a stereotypical impression of the continent, associating it with poverty, hunger, and persistent civil conflicts. As children, we might have been exposed to campaigns like “The Starvation Thirty,” efforts to donate old shoes to Africa, or movies depicting the tragic events such as the genocide at the Grand Luanda Hotel. Unfortunately, these representations often fail to portray the positive aspects of Africa…

In this book, two Africa-shaped maps are utilized to provide key insights into Africa’s history of colonization. The map on the left illustrates the colonial powers of various European countries, represented by different colors. France and the United Kingdom have the largest presence, as evident from the picture. On the right side, another map offers a quick overview of Africa’s size. This perspective is not commonly observed on regular jigsaw puzzles. It is important to note that the size depicted on the map is not true to scale due to latitude distortions. However, did you know? Africa is three times larger than the United States!

#
Middle East

Like the stereotype of Africa, our first instinct when it comes to the Middle East is chaos.

But where did this chaos originate? While it is acknowledged that this region has experienced turmoil for thousands of years, the aftermath of the First World War placed significant responsibility on Britain and France (once again!). (Though it seems that the United States has now taken on a prominent role…) Following the First World War, these two European powers insisted on grouping different ethnic groups together within a single country based on “geographical location,” or conversely, forcibly dividing ethnically homogeneous groups with shared language and heritage into separate nations. This approach transformed an already unsettled region into a veritable minefield of conflicts.

#Australia

The tensions and trade war between Australia and China, which have escalated in recent months, were actually predicted in this book. It highlights that international relations are shaped by broader circumstances rather than isolated news events. Initially, Australia and China enjoyed a strong trade relationship, with a friendly attitude towards one another. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic unveiled hidden imbalances and compromises. In October 2020, Australia, Japan, India, and the United States held a four-nation security meeting, indicating that Australia is not only known for being an immigrant paradise and home to kangaroos and koalas but also a significant power in the South Pacific.

The book also delves into the relationship between Japan and South Korea, the power dynamics in the Arctic, and even speculates about the future of space exploration. Furthermore, Lara’s recommended reading list encompasses a wide range of age groups, from high school and college students to adults and even elementary school children. As demonstrated in the video above, interacting with your child doesn’t necessarily require deep or exhaustive discussions; a well-crafted guidebook can ignite curiosity and interest effectively.

Numerous introductory books on world culture exist, but many of them merely present data or provide superficial overviews. For example, they might state facts such as the number of countries in Africa, population figures, and land area, without delving into the diverse tribes and peoples that inhabit the continent. Geography books that offer additional perspectives and insights are rare and hard to come by.

The English title of this book is “Prisoners of Geography: Our World Explained in 12 Simple Maps.” When I encountered the word “Prisoners,” it truly brought a smile to my face. It appears that we are all captives of geography in some way, don’t we?

#Read 10 minutes in the morning, the world is different from what you think

This book is primarily intended for middle school students and above, as it consists of pure text. It is suitable for readers aged 10 and above.

The original content of this book is extracted from articles written by renowned authors such as Milan Kundera. These articles have been carefully selected and edited by Chu Shiying, an international NGO worker, along with a guided reading section. The objective is to challenge preconceived notions about specific cultures and encourage readers to contemplate life through the perspectives of different countries.

The recent incidents of suicide among Taiwanese university students prompt us to reflect on whether the sole responsibility of students is to excel academically and obtain perfect scores. The world is vast, and it would be beneficial if our children grow up knowing that it extends beyond the confines of classrooms. By fostering enthusiasm and curiosity about the world during their formative years, rather than succumbing to excessive pressure, they can embrace life with optimism and anticipation. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?
