Sara Josephine Baker (1873~1945)
Doctor Joe, America’s first female health official and feminist, saved the lives of more than 90,000 New York babies. She was also known as Dr. Joe. In the early 1900s in New York, women studying or practicing medicine were not very popular. However, in her first job as a health officer, she was assigned to inspect the health of women and children in the worst district.
Dr. Joe did not give up or get discouraged by this. On the contrary, she took the problem more seriously and implemented a series of programs. This included forming a team to provide health education to newborns’ families, promoting breastfeeding, establishing distribution points for children’s dairy products, and providing medication to address neonatal blindness caused by gonorrhea. Her efforts reduced the under-5 mortality rate in New York from 17% to 5% in the 1900s.
Dr. Joe also played an important role in tracking the events of “Typhoid Mary.”
Despite the unfriendly external environment towards women, Dr. Joe continued to do the right thing. Her persistence and strength as an individual were not weak, and she saved countless new lives.
